The Erdene Microgrid Research and Development Center held its opening ceremony on Saturday, 16 May 2026. The Center was established under the project "Operation and Deployment of a Stand-Alone Microgrid for Studying Mongolia's Energy Sector Market."

The Center's core infrastructure was funded through the "International Joint Research Cooperation" program of the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP), under the Republic of Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The project was implemented jointly by the School of Engineering and Technology of the National University of Mongolia on the Mongolian side and I-ON Communications Co., Ltd. on the Korean side.

The microgrid system includes:

  • 80 kW solar PV array
  • Three wind turbines of 10 kW each
  • 110 kW backup generator
  • 150 kWh battery energy storage
  • 250 kVA transformer for distribution at the 10 kV level
  • Solar thermal collector serving 50 m², supplying heating and hot water for the on-site mine workers' accommodation

With the Center now in operation, new opportunities open up for research, innovation and hands-on engineering training in renewable energy, as well as for implementing international joint projects.
