Dugarjav BAYASGALAN

Associate professor · Researchers

Dugarjav Bayasgalan is former Head of the Department of Green Energy and Engineering and Associate Professor at the National University of Mongolia's School of Engineering and Technology. Currently he is working as head of "Erdene-Microgrid R&D center" of NUM. He earned his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Konkuk University, Seoul, and his B.Eng. from the Mongolian University of Science and Technology. A certified renewable energy consulting engineer and energy auditor, his research covers power electronics, grid-connected PV, energy storage, microgrids and the Northeast Asian Super Grid, with nearly 50 published papers. He serves on the Ministry of Energy's Science and Technology Commission, chairs the Mongolian Electric Vehicle Association, and has consulted for the ADB, World Bank, UNICEF, GGGI, GIZ and JICA — currently leading the ADB's coal-to-solar transition study for Ulaanbaatar's ger districts.

Dr. Bayasgalan Dugarjav is an Associate Professor at the School of Engineering and Technology of the National University of Mongolia in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. He obtained his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering (2005) from the Mongolian University of Science and Technology in the mechatronics field by controlling a robot machine. Bayasgalan received the M.S.E.E and Ph.D. in Electrical engineering from the Konkuk University, Seoul, Korea in 2008 and 2012, respectively. In 2013, he joined the Department of Automation for Electric system as a Senior lecturer, and he worked as vice director of the National Renewable Energy Centre, a state-owned enterprise. He joined the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at NUM in 2014 as an associate professor, and he founded the Power Electronics Research Laboratory in 2016.

Professor Bayasgalan is actively working as the president, founding member, and secretary-general of several non-governmental organizations, such as the "Association for Renewable Energy Engineers", "Mongolia Energy Club", "Mongolia Society for Northeast Asia Super", and "Mongolia Electric Vehicle Association".

He has served a leading role from the Mongolia side for several research and educational projects, such as R&D on Power electronics and Industrial automation under Mongolia-Japan Engineering Education development supported by JICA.

He performed various duties in Mongolia to develop distributed power generation systems, including being a committee member under the Ministry of Energy, Mongolia, to create related national regulations, a member of a working group for the Energy Regulatory Commission to make supporting mechanisms and tariff structure and worked on several case studies with the support of international organizations such as World Bank, Global Green Growth Institute and ADB.

In addition to being co-investigator on numerous research initiatives through the years, examples of the varied research where he has been Principal Investigator (PI) include an international Research Cooperation project grant, which was titled “Operation and Demonstration of the standalone Microgrid to explore Mongolian energy industry market”, “Development of solar-based hybrid distributed generation system for the urban redevelopment project of Ger district in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia” (2021-2024).

His research scope is power conversion systems, motor drivers, renewable energy system integration, and new alternative sources such as hydrogen so on
